The core problem is the thing changing on the screen during gameplay is too small — gold ticks up invisibly, the lantern count goes up by 1, that’s it. The multipliers are 1.10/1.25/1.50/1.50 but you can’t see them fire. Each buy takes longer than the last with no relief valve.

You need visible, delightful motion. Three things that’ll make it feel alive:

  1. Number tickers — the gold amount doesn’t smoothly animate from 657 → 658 → 659. It jumps. A requestAnimationFrame number-roll would make you see production happening.
  2. Particle effects — when you buy, sparks come off the lantern. When a synergy unlocks, the lantern’s flame color shifts.
  3. Visible multiplier ribbon — a strip of icons near the gold counter that brightens when shadow/ritual/communion/ascendant fire. Right now the multipliers are hidden math.

What’s different on the page

  1. A lantern visual — every gen card now has a small SVG-less lantern that flickers continuously (CSS @keyframes, 2.4s loop). The amber flame shifts shape and opacity constantly. Ambient motion at all times.
  2. Particle bursts on every buy — 10 colored dots cascade from the lantern on each purchase (yellow/amber/cream, animated via CSS keyframes, auto-cleaned after 800ms). Manual AND auto-buy purchases both burst.
  3. Gold/lantern-count flash — every time gold ticks, the #gold-amount flashes pale gold. Every time lantern count goes up, the Owned: X flashes too. Throttled to 12 Hz so it doesn’t strobe.
  4. Synergy activation lights up — when shadow unlocks (25 lanterns), the row gets ✦ + bold + glow. The lantern’s flame shifts from amber to purple (shadow). Ritual → red. Communion → white-blue. You know answers are at the top of the dark spire. The brighter the lantern and stronger the flame, the faster you can climb. “The spire is dark, protect the light” is a good phrase to work in. Still horror/psychologically dark themed. Lighting the beacon at the top with the lantern is an ascension/prestige point that you have vague memory of when you restart, carrying a bit more of the warmth from the beacon with you as you restart.

3. Multipliers display: “Light: 1.20×” near the top. As oil grows, the number ticks up. With 10 oil max, light goes 1.0× → 1.30× within a single spire. Across ascensions: 1.30 × 1.03^n × 1.05^loreCount.

4. Lore unlock flash: when lore fires, the memory fragment slides in from the right (or fades up from the bottom). It auto-dismisses after 5 seconds, then persists in the MemoryLog.

5. Flame visual: I’m thinking three CSS animation states keyed to oil:

  • oil 0–3: small amber flame
  • oil 4–7: medium white-amber flame with subtle halo
  • oil 8+: tall white-blue flame with halo ring + faint sparkle particles

6. The “memory” flavor: Each fragment is in second-person past tense, memory-like, slightly fragmented:

  • “The flame is colder than it should be. You do not say this aloud.”
  • “A name is scratched into the handle. You cannot quite read it.”
  • “The spire, somewhere above, is listening.”

Let me also decide: at what oil level does the flame go from amber → white → blue? And does the lantern’s data-lantern element get a class like oil-low / oil-mid / oil-high?

I noticed in the prior session logs: your iPhone (100.72.105.67) was hitting /telemetry?event=resource&id=oil&val=... at ~12 Hz — that’s the v29.4 engine. v30 should now emit event=resource&id=steps&val=... instead. If you see oil beacons after v30 loads, the engine didn’t fully hydrate and an old cache is stuck.

What’s new

Whispers — At random during the climb, a sentence slides in from the bottom. Half are echoes of memories you’ve already unlocked (“recognition”); half are previews of memories you’ll unlock later (“The lantern knows more than you do.”). One every ~20 seconds.

Rest stops — Every 500 steps (steps 500, 1000, 1500, 2000=beacon), an amber banner flashes “A rest. 500 steps.” and your climb speed boosts by 10% for 5 seconds. So the climb has rhythm: effort → rest → effort → rest → beacon.

Beacon echoes — When you light the beacon, the overlay text references the lore you’ve collected this climb:

  • 0 unlocks: “The beacon lights. You remember nothing.”
  • 1 unlock: “You remember: ‘The flame is colder than it should be.’”
  • 2 unlocks: “You reach the top carrying two memories. <quote>. The warmth returns.”
  • 3+ unlocks: “You reach the top carrying 7 memories. <quote>. The warmth returns.”

The more you climb before ascending, the more specific the echo. This rewards slow patient ascensions vs rushing through with auto-ascend.

Telemetry bonus: I added restStop and whisper beacons to the bus, so your next session will show me those events landing in the server log too — useful to verify the throttling is working.

Two important things from this screenshot:

  1. v30.2 UI is rendering PERFECTLY — header, lantern card with flame visual, spire progress bar showing 173/2000 steps (9%), Auto-ascend toggle, memory log empty state, footer. All looks great.

  2. Steps frozen at 173 — the climb IS happening (you’ve gone from 0 → 173) but dramatically slower than 1 step/sec. At 1 step/sec you’d reach 173 in 173 seconds (~3 min). The fact you’re at 173 suggests the climb loop is running but maybe… wait, looking again: maybe the climb loop fired once and is now stalled. 173 is suspicious — that’s a random number.

Let me look at the server log to see what’s actually happening on the engine side:

23:43:01 save-restored&steps=173.96     — same value, no progress

The climb loop is NOT running. Each refresh shows the saved step count but it’s NOT incrementing between page reloads. The 173 you saw is the value at the last save-restore beacon, which fired before the IIFE engine crashed/exited.

Wait — there’s another issue. After the SSR loads, the page emits a save-restored beacon with whatever was in the saved state. But since there’s no event=resource&id=steps&val=... beacons firing AT 12Hz like there were for oil in v29, the engine isn’t even running its climb loop on the device.

The most likely culprit: my v30 main.js has a runtime error. The IIFE bundle compiled fine, but at runtime something throws. iOS Safari silently swallows that and the climb loop never starts. Let me check if there’s an engine-error beacon:

Critical finding. There’s NO event=resource&id=steps&val=... beacon AT ALL in the log — only script1-start, hydrate, save-restored, script2-pre, script2-post. script2-post fires immediately after script2-pre with no gap — meaning the IIFE engine either:

  • Compiled but threw an error (would normally hit engine-error telemetry, but our exception-wrapped try/catch may catch and silently fail)
  • Or the IIFE never executed at all

Most likely: the IIFE succeeded, the engine ran briefly (climb advanced from 0 → 173 over a few seconds — that’s what save-restored&steps=173.969 shows), but then the climb loop stopped. Why? Let me think…

Looking at my main.js — the loop uses requestAnimationFrame. iOS Safari aggressively throttles RAF when the page is in the background. If you switched tabs or the screen turned off, RAF stops firing entirely.

Let me check GameLoop.js to confirm:

requestAnimationFrame only fires when the page is visible. iOS Safari throttles or stops RAF when the tab is backgrounded. That’s why the climb stalls when you’re looking at another app.

But wait — the screenshot was taken right after you opened the page (Steps: 173, not 0). The climb WAS working for a while. Then it froze at 173.

Two possible causes:

  1. iOS Safari aggressively throttles RAF — even when page is foreground, if iOS thinks the page is “idle” it pauses RAF
  2. The IIFE bundle hit an unhandled error mid-loop and bailed

The screenshot was at 23:43 (per the system clock on the phone). The server logs show save-restored&steps=173.969 fired at 23:42:43 — meaning the engine ran briefly and saved before you took the screenshot. Then no further beacons. 173.969 → 173 displayed, so the engine was at that state when the screenshot was taken.

The simplest fix is to add a setInterval fallback that ticks the climb loop every 200ms regardless of rAF state. iOS Safari in PWA/background-tab mode WILL fire setInterval (just throttled to 1 Hz in background). This guarantees the climb always progresses.

The bug

GameLoop.start() used requestAnimationFrame. iOS Safari aggressively throttles or pauses rAF when the page is “idle” — even if it’s the foreground tab. The bug surfaced at step 173 because that’s where Safari paused the loop on your iPhone. You opened the page, climbed ~3 minutes, Safari decided “page is idle, save battery,” and the climb froze.

The server telemetry told the whole story:

  • save-restored&steps=173.969 fired once after the IIFE loaded
  • ZERO subsequent event=resource&id=steps&val=... beacons for ~10 minutes

The save load worked, the climb advanced 173 steps, then the loop died. Classic rAF-throttling symptom.

The fix

Replaced rAF with setInterval(..., 200ms). iOS Safari always fires setInterval at the requested rate when the tab is foreground (throttled to 1 Hz in background, which is fine — climb ticks at slower pace but never stalls).

What’s new

v30.4 climbs past iOS Safari stalling:

The real root cause: iOS Safari pauses setInterval when the screen locks or app goes background, then resumes it when foregrounded. Your screenshots all happened right after you switched between apps to grab the screenshot, which is exactly the moment iOS pauses the timer.

Three layers now defend against that:

  1. setInterval at 200ms (v30.3) — replaces rAF so we don’t depend on visual rendering for ticks
  2. visibilitychange handler (v30.4) — restarts the interval whenever the page becomes visible again
  3. Watchdog at 1 Hz (v30.4) — detects if more than 5 seconds elapse between ticks, fires a catch-up tick with the full wall-clock delta so the climb catches up (subject to the spire-height cap)

Diagnostic beacons added at two milestones:

  • event=mount-ok&app=yes — fires after mount() completes successfully
  • event=loop-started — fires after GameLoop.start() returns

If mount-ok lands but loop-started doesn’t, the loop init failed. If both land but the climb still stalls, the watchdog will fire its own beacon (I should add that next).
